I’ve got a little secret.

Yup, it’s true! I heart hemp hearts. More specifically Manitoba Harvest hemp hearts!
For anyone who has never tried hemp hearts, I find they taste a lot like a chopped walnut, others compare them more to a sesame seed or pine nut. Any way you look at it, you can easily add these little hearts into lots of recipes without even realizing they are there (which also makes them kid friendly!).
Some recipes I’ve added hemp hearts to recently include my
- Chocolate Macaroons <—the perfect way to sneak a little extra nutrition in a tasty macaroon!
- Granola Bars
- In my smoothies in place of ground flax (which is great if I make it the night before as hemp hearts don’t gel the way flax does, my smoothies isn’t as thick in the morning)
- On top of cereal
- With fruit and yogurt
If you are wondering how hemp hearts compare to flax and chia, they have a higher protein value, but a lot less fibre. I often add hemp hearts to my cereal for a little added protein, but when it comes to my smoothies I tend to stick with ground flax in order to get the higher fibre content (since I’m already using both greek yogurt and protein powder in my smoothie). Hemp hearts are also lower in carbs than flax and chia so if you are someone who needs to keep their carb intake in check that is another great tidbit to know.
Something that I really like is that Manitoba Harvest Hemp Hearts are grown in Canada, and are manufacturer in their own hemp-dedicated facility in Manitoba. Nothing else gets produced there but hemp products so you have no worries of cross contamination with seeds, nuts, or other allergens of that nature. Of course, it’s the grown and produced in Canada part that I really love. Go Canada! 😀

Hemp hearts are also high in magnesium which is needed for proper calcium absorption, strong bones, maintaining stable blood sugar, and much more, and manganese which is needed for healthy bones, assisting metabolic activity, proper function of the thyroid gland and sex hormones, regulating blood sugar, etc. This coupled with the trace amounts of other minerals and vitamins make hemp hearts a great nutrition choice for anyone who is looking to improve their health.
