Not only were they in the valley, they were less than a kilometre from my house this past Saturday! Okay, so it might not have been any of the “big” names from the Food Network, but there were indeed here none the less, and I as a dedicatedFood Network watcher, and blogger had to of course go check things out.
They were here for the Annapolis Valley Giant Food Growers Association’s giant vegetable weigh-off. Yup, you read that right. Any of my readers who are local probably already know all of this, and it doesn’t seem odd, but for you non-country folk it may not seem quite so normal 😉

Because it was nearby I walked up after lunch to see what there was to see. While the weigh-off has been going on for a number of years now, it was the first time I actually had the chance to check it out. There were lots of people around, and lots of pumpkins (many of which could easily out-weigh 4-5 people!)
Maybe not these ones…

but these sure could!

I saw the camera crew filming, and overheard them telling someone that they were filming for the show Outrageous Food, so if you a Food Network watcher like me, you’ll have to keep you eyes open (probably not for a while) for this episode!

It is entirely possible I will be in the background looking shifty and taking pictures 😉

Weighing giant pumpkins is no easy task!

That’s a heavy pumpkin! This one weighed in at 943 pounds!

I did see one before I left that weighed over 1000lbs, and the winning pumpkin came in at 1297 pounds. Amazing! I can only assume that this monster was the winning pumpkin since it was visually so much larger than the rest

But it’s not just giant pumpkins and squash, inside there was an array of giant fruits and vegetables!

And while this may look like a giant bunch of kale, it was actually just one giant stock!

It was really interesting, I can’t even imagine how much work it takes to grow a pumpkin, or any vegetable that is so huge! As someone who enjoys training for and running in distance races, I have a lot of respect for how much dedication this sport must take, and while it might seem a bit odd to some, I think it’s pretty dang cool.
What is the biggest fruit or vegetable you have ever seen? For me it’s clearly a pumpkin!

I really need to take the kids here next year!
They had a lot of activities going on too, I bet your kids would love it (just seeing the giant pumpkins is reason enough to go however)
