Multi-Grain Cheerios + Ancient Grains Review & Giveaway

Haaaaaapppppy Friday everyone! 😀 😀 Vacation is getting closer by the minute! I just need to make it through working this weekend and then I’ve got a lovely 7 days to relax. I can’t wait! But before I move into vacay mode, I still have a few posts to share with you guys over the next day or two, and then I have guest posts lined up to keep you entertained next week!

But let’s get back to business, and today that business is Cheerios! More specifically the new Multi-Grain Cheerios + Ancient Grains

7223030_GM_Cheerios

I don’t think anyone reading this is unfamiliar with Cheerios since it’s one of the foods most all of us grew up with, but these aren’t just your run of the mill Cheerios, these are Cheerios with an ancient grains twist!

The new cereal includes the classic Multi-Grain Cheerios you love with the added natural goodness of lightly puffed and toasted kamut, spelt and corn, and is sweetened with just a hint of cinnamon and spice.

Multi-Grain Cheerios + Ancient Grains launches today (June 27th), but I was fortunate enough to get an advanced box in order to complete this review and have been happily snacking on them all week long.

IMG_7670

The very first thing I noticed about them was the added cinnamon and spice flavour <— it’s SO good! These days I seem to prefer Honey Nut Cheerios over the plain variety because I like that added honey flavour, and the same holds true with these. While I wouldn’t necessarily eat a handful of plain Cheerios as a snack, I’ve found myself looking forward to eating these both plain and in the standard cereal and milk fashion as well. 😉

IMG_7665

You can see that the bulk of the cereal is still the ftraditional multi-grain “o” shapes, but there are toasted pieces of kamut, spelt and corn found throughout. And call me weird (it’s okay, I know I am) but I’ve come find look forward to finding the other grains especially when eating them dry. Maybe it’s the change of texture, I’m not sure but the kid in me thinks it sort of fun!

Speaking of kids, one thing I thought about a number of times with this cereal is how it would make a good “gateway” grain. Meaning that it can often be hard to get kids (and husbands, and well sometimes everyone) to try new things and grains are no different. Tell someone you’re going to give them a kamut and spelt cereal and they may give you the stink eye. Tell them you are giving them Cheerios and forget to mention the Multi-Grain and Ancient Grains part and you could quite possibly get away with it. Or at least get away with it long enough for them to take a few bites. And if you win that battle it opens up the playing field for you to maybe try using those grains in other ways (like replacing some wheat flour with spelt) and if anyone asks questions you can say, “but you’ve been eating spelt in your cereal for weeks!”.

Look at me, I don’t even have kids and I’m already looking at way to decieve them. I must get it from my mother. When we were kids she liked to make chocolate zucchini cake but not tell us there was zucchini in it until we questioned her about the “green thing” we found in our cake. But I digress…

Of course Multi-Grain Cheerios already contain more nutrition than the original because they are multi-grain, but now we’ve also added the power of corn, spelt (which has a moderate amount of gluten and is higher in protein than wheat) and kamut (which is higher in selenium, zinc and magnesium than wheat) which makes this new version of the traditional stand-by even more nutritional fabulous, and the added cinnamon and spice make them my new favourite Cheerios!

So this weekend when you’re out grocery shopping, take a look in the cereal isle for Multi-Grain Cheerios + Ancient Grains, and if you see them pick up a box to try – who knows, you might find a new favourite Cheerios too!

But you don’t have to take my word for it, the awesome folks at Cheerios want to give one of YOU some of the new Multi-Grain Cheerios + Ancient Grains to try as well! And to go along with their cereal, the lucky winner will also receive a NutriBullet, Lululemon yoga mat and block for a total prize value of approx. $170!

A diet containing whole grains prevents and can improve conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, cholesterol, gallstones and atherosclerosis. People who include whole grains in their diet have better weight management and fewer chronic health conditions. Plus, ancient grains can be delicious. 🙂
