The first post of the year when you have a healthy living lifestyle blog always seems like a big undertaking. Like there is an expectation for me to post my healthy goals for the year, or to give you some ideas on how you can live a healthier life. But I feel like everyone is doing that, so I’m going to share some simple daily tips to look and feel great in 2017 instead.
Today’s post is really fitting as it is the first post I am publishing as part of my ambassadorship with Bayer for 2017. I am happy to be partnering with Bayer and am looking forward to bringing you some great content this year through the collaboration.
Now let’s get to today’s post!
After too many holiday treats or late-nights catching up with friends and family at holiday gatherings, you may be left feeling more frazzled than fresh, I know I am! The good news is that it’s relatively easy to get back on track. January is the perfect time to commit to new habits to help you look and feel great. For example:
- Stay Hydrated
- One of the simplest fixes you can make to your beauty routine is to swap out pop for water. Experts say drinking water can help prevent dehydration-induced wrinkles. Did you know one of the first signs of dehydration is hunger? So drink up – you’ll feel better, and it might help you cut back on needless snacking at the same time!
- TIP: Try setting reminders in your calendar to fill up your glass with water every couple hours. Or calculate how many time you need to fill your bottle (or glass) to reach your daily goal, then start the day with rubber bands on your glass. Each time you fill up remove one band – when all the bands are gone, you’re done! Give it a couple weeks, and it will become routine!
- Stay Moisturized
- Silky smooth skin is the first step in a beauty routine and winter can be especially rough on sensitive skin. The Dermal Therapy line of moisturizers helps restore your skin’s moisture with elements similar to those found naturally in healthy skin.
- TIP: Make it part of your shower routine to moisturize. After a hectic day, the shower may feel like a relaxing oasis. Extend that feeling by taking the time to moisturize after each shower.
- Get enough sleep
- If you get less than six hours sleep, it’s likely affecting your appearance and you may notice wrinkles, dark circles or puffy eyes. It even changes your facial expressions; you tend to furrow your brow and frown more when you’re tired. I know after being on vacation for a week, I started staying up later and later and definitely felt the effects. The past two nights I’ve been going to bed earlier and I already feel so much better!
- TIP: Set an alarm for bed time. You set an alarm to get out of bed in the morning. Use the same approach to make sure you get to bed early enough at night!
- Enjoy more good hair days
- While in the winter you can hide under toques and scarves, January is the time to start thinking about your spring hair. When the weather warms up your hair will be on full display. Taking steps now means you’ll be ready when spring arives. PRIORIN® is a supplement that supplies the hair with millet extract, the amino acid L-cystine and calcium pantothenate, which in combination has been clinically shown to promote hair growth and hair re-growth. PRIORIN® also contains the nutrient biotin, which helps to maintain healthy hair. Take 2 capsules daily with food for 3-6 months.
- TIP: Make it a part of your breakfast or lunch routine so you remember to take supplements daily. I keep them right on my counter top where I see them each morning when I am making breakfast.
- Get Some Sun
- Living in North America means we are exposed to fewer hours of sunlight during the winter months, and most dietitians agree that we need to be more diligent about making sure we get enough vitamin D. Since Vitamin D comes from the sun, if you are unable to get it naturally, a supplement might be fore you. Talk to your local pharmacist for advice on whether you should be taking a vitamin D supplement.
- TIP: If you find that you get the winter blahs in January and February each year, you may want to invest in a natural spectrum light like a HappyLight. These lights won’t increase your vitamin D intake, but do provide light therapy that can help fight SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) and can help to re-calibrate our circadian rhythm when used in the mornings.
