Java Elixir: A Good Tasting Tincture?

Can a tincture taste good? Why yes, yes it can. Don’t know what a tincture is? It’s basically a concentrated herbal extract made of alcohol and mixed herbs, and while they are super effective, in my experience they are also super icky tasting. The kind of taste that makes you shake your head and stick out your tongue while making a weird sound after you swallow 😉 or at least that’s been my experience anyway…

Back in April I was contacted by Chris, the creator of Java Elixir, who wanted to combine his love for coffee with the health benefits of a tincture in a new way. What was born out of his idea was Java Elixir, a heat stable tincture with a flavour profile that vanishes when added in coffee based drinks. I was really intrigued by the concept (and excited to help out a fellow Canadian with a new product) so when he asked if I would be interested in trying out the product I jumped at the chance!

Java Elixir currently produces the three products shown above, Focus +, Immunity, and a 10 Day Detox blend.

Focus+ provides you with an even, sustained flow of energy to help you stay on task and at your best throughout your day. And unlike the majority of energy supplements on the market, Focus+ is free of nasty side effects. After all, what good is a quick jolt of energy if it’s going to leave you feeling worse off than before you took it? With Focus, there are no jitters, no nerves, and definitely no crash to worry about — just pure, clean energy. Focus+ is formulated using only natural ingredients of the highest quality. Korean red ginseng root, St. John’s wort flower, oat green topsto, gingko leaf, and Brahmi and lemon balm arial parts combine to form a potent herbal energy blend.

Immunity: The best way to fight off a cold is to avoid catching one in the first place — easier said than done, we know. Whether you’ve been under a great deal of stress, haven’t been eating as healthily as you’d like, or haven’t been getting those all important eight hours of rest each night, your immune system is likely being compromised, leaving you vulnerable to sickness. You’re exposed to all manner of germs each and every day, and if your immune system has been weakened by the daily grind, you’re that much more likely to be laid up with a nasty cold at an inconvenient moment (not that there’s a convenient time to catch a cold).Immunity uses a combination of burdock root, sheep sorrel root, slippery elm bark, and turkey rhubarb root. Each of these four ingredients are natural, herbal remedies that have long been regarded as having distinct and powerful medicinal uses. They work together in our Immunity blend to remove toxins from the blood, reduce inflammation, and strengthen your body’s natural defenses against illness.

Detox is not a miracle weight loss supplement. Nor is it part of an inordinately complex diet plan replete with requirements and restrictions not the least bit conducive to the average person’s lifestyle. Detox is instead a simple, one-step process meant to cleanse, protect, and strengthen two of your body’s most vital organs: the liver and kidneys. Detox uses a potent selection of herbal ingredients as part of a three-tiered cleanse. In step one, red clover flower, Oregon grape root, and burdock root act to cleanse and purify the blood, liver, and kidneys. In step two, Echinacea root works to protect your system from cold, flu, and infection throughout the detoxification process. Finally, southern prickly ash bark, in conjunction with pau d’arco inner bark, strengthen your organs, wrapping up the detox and kick-starting the recovery process.

But let’s get to what you really want to know – can you taste it in your coffee?

I’m the sort of person who always thinks they can taste something in their food or drink if I know something has been added, and I totally and 100% can not tell when I’ve added any of the formulas to coffee. To be more specific, I can’t taste them in a latte (because that’s my coffee of choice).

I did ask Chris what would happen if java elixir was added to a different (non-coffee) beverage, and he said that you would probably still taste a hint of the tincture in other drinks, because they made the product specifically for coffee.

As far as how effective they are, I think that is a personal thing. I find that I respond very well to tinctures, more so than traditional supplements so it’s no surprise that I am happy with Java Elixir (especially since I don’t have to do that shaking of the head, stick out the tongue and make a weird noise each time I have some!). In fact my one and only complaint is that I normally don’t drink coffee on a daily basis so I don’t get to use the blends as often as I’d like – and that’s no one’s fault but my own!
