June Reads

It’s a bit later than usual, but it’s time once again for a recap of what I read last month!

The photo links below are affiliate links, but mostly because that is the easiest way to get a photo embedded for each book. However, if you do make a purchase through one of these links I will stand to make a nickel or so. SO basically this post is funding my rentirement. If I’m never planning to retire, haha.

Now that, that is out of the way 😉 Here is what I read last month!

The Wonderful World of Oz – Frank Baum

Audible version read by Anne Hathway

As much as I loved the movie growing up, I had never read the book so decided to get the audiobook a listen last month when I was inbetween longer audio books. Read by Anne Hathway this is a pure delight. Her voices for the characters really added to the story and I was surprised at how much of the story went untold in the movie. A quick listen, but a very enjoyable one. I’m glad I decided to check it out!

Fifteen Dogs – Andre Alexis

This has won so many awards and seemed like an interesting concept so I was interested to give it a read. In the end, I didn’t really enjoy it. I found it deperessing and sad, which I suppose it a relevant take on humanity in 2017, but I thikn I’ll stick to my happy “fluff” stories.

Big Mushy Happy Lump – Sarah Andersen

I feel guilty even includig this graphic noel since it took me about 15 minutes to get through, but I really liked it and giggled at many of the cartoons so it stays. Would be a great gift for a friend going through a tough time to cheer them up!

The Little Book of Hygge – Meik Wiking

After lots of talk about hygge this last six months or so, I thought I’d give this a read to add to my understanding of the concept. It’s a nice book and shares some great ways to simplify and learn to love your life. Nothing life changing for me, but a nice quick read all the same!

Stars Above – Marissa Meyer

And so, my Lunar Chronicles adventure ends. This a collection of short stories based in the Lunar Chronicles universe. Some taking place beofre, during and after the rest of the story. A few of the stories didn’t really excite me, but it was all worth it for the last one!

A Wrinkle In Time – Madeleine ‘Engle

Here’s another children’s book I had never read. I listened to the e-book version and you know what? I’m not sure I liked it. I know, I know, but the ending seemed weird and uprupt to me. I realize this is the first in a triology (?) but I have no interest in reading the rest. I am however, interested in watching the new movie when it comes out. Mabye that will change my mind!

I think part of my dislike was the voice of the woman reading the book. I don’t know what it was but something about her voice just irritated me.

Girl Boss – Sophia Amoruso

Another quick read, and one that has been recommended a lot lately by #Girlbosses. What can I say? It was both autobiographical and not, gave some good advice but again nothing overly earth shattering. Her story though has intrigued me enough to but the Netflix show on my radar. I haven’t yet watched it, but I think I will, as what she did in the online marketing world is pretty interesting!

Talking As Fast As I Can – Lauren Graham

I expected to not love this, but I did. I listened to the audiobook read by Lauren and it was AMAZING. I think the audiobook is 100% the way to go, listenin gto her voice really added to the story. Having said that, I found she shared some amazing tips for writers and business ladies in general that I really loved. This is one that I want to get in hardcopy to use for reference. Loved, loved, loved it.

Heart: The Inside Story of Our Body’s Most Heroic Organ – Johannes Hinrich von Borstel

I recieved this as a review copy when the book first came out a month or two ago. It is written in a way that makes the inner working of the heart both understandable and interesting to the average person. I was pleased to see many facts I learned in my trainings being re-iterated in this book (that doens’t always happen…) and also new concepts I didn’t know or fully understand. If you are interested in learning more aobut how your heart works and all the in’s and out’s definitely check it out!

Attachments – Rainbow Rowell

LOVED.

IT.

This has everything I want in a chick lit book. Humour, disaster, and a certain sense of, “How are they going to sort this all out!?!?!?”

I’m having a hard time deciding if this has over thrown Fan Girl as my favourite Rainbow Rowell novel or not, but it is definitely a re-reader.

Instaed of choosing a to read and to pass book this month, I’m going to choose two books that you should check out – one faction, and one non-fiction.

The fiction pick is – you guessed it “Attachments”. Perfect for anyone like me, who loves a fluffy chick-lit book. And my Non-fiction pick is “Talking As Fast As I Can.” While you don’t have to be a Gilmore Girls fan to enjoy this one, it will certainly help if you are. There are a few chapters that are very Gilmore Girl heavy and I doubt someone who hasn’t watched the show would like those.

And for the record, Lauren is with the rest of the free world – that’s more of a cliffhanger than an ending at the end of the revival – – – isn’t it?

I will definitely have to pick up the audiobook for Lauren Graham’s book! I really love the audiobooks by comedians that they read themselves, Poehler, Kaling, etc. So I am sure that I would love this too!
