This year is Canada’s 150th Birthday, so this summer I’ve decided to hit up a bunch of the “tourist” spots in my own area that I have never visited, or don’t visit very often. I’m going to be talking more about that in the next week or so, but today I’m here to tell you all about my recent trip to Black Rock and how we upped the fun factor by bringing along our new Fuji FinePix XP120.
The XP120 is waterproof (up to 65 feet) and shockproof (up to 5.8ft) which makes it perfect for outdoor adventures. Especially since I’m a notorious clutz having a camera with a little extra protection is quite wise indeed. I’m dying to take it kayaking and stand up paddleboarding, but it was a bit too cold for those activities this past weekend, so instead, we took it to the shore!
Growing up just a 15 or so minute drive from the Bay of Fundy means you sort of take it for granted. I forget that there are people who have never seen the ocean, nevermind can go hang out at the shore most anytime they like.
I have this dream of taking the camera to one of our local waterfalls and trekking behind the waterfall for some fun photos, but again – it was too darn cold for that sort of thing, so this was the only waterfall I got to play in, haha.
What’s really nice about the XP120, is that while it’s a rugged camera, it still takes fantastic pictures. In the past, I’ve always thought of waterproof cameras as something fun, but never really had much faith in the quality of the photos they take. This camera as proven me wrong by capturing some pretty cool shots.
Fortunately, the tide was out so the rocks were pretty dry (they are crazy slippery when wet), but kelp and snails still keep you on your toes and watching your step!
It was really nice to know that even if I did slip and fall, I shouldn’t have to worry too much about damaging my camera (which is generally my main concern when out taking pictures at the shore), so instead of worrying about falling, I could spend more time thinking of fun ways to use the camera!
In addition to taking great photos, the XP120 also shoots in full 1080p HD allowing us to vlog our trip, check out the video below for some really cool underwater footage!
Did you catch the little snail?
Go back to 2:02 and take another look – I’ll wait. 😉
I wish we would have noticed him at the time and got more footage of him (or her?) cruising along!
I still can’t get over how flipping COOL it is to be able to take awesome video like that under water!
Another feature I can’t wait to try out is the time-lapse video setting. I wish we had, had the time to set up a tripod and capture some time-lapse footage of the tide coming in, but by the time we finished shooting our video footage the camera battery was getting pretty low so that wasn’t an option – this time. But I have a fun idea for how I’m going to use that feature right here at home so keep an eye out for that. 😉
Where to Buy
You can purchase the Fuji FinePix XP120 on the FujiFilm website. It retails for $240 but is on sale for $199 until the end of June!
While you’re visiting the Fuji site, be sure to check out the Instax Mini 70. We’ve really seen a resurgence in popularity of the Instax Cameras these past few years, and why wouldn’t we? They are really cute and fun for parties. The Instax Mini 70 is particularly cool because it has a built-in selfie mirror on the front so you can see what you are taking a photo of, and also has a selfie mode to help you get the best shot every time!
And guess what? Fuji is giving one away to one of my readers!
