Taming your inner five-year-old, you know, the one that lives inside your brain and likes to throw temper tantrums? The one who particularly likes to come out when you are tired, overworked, stressed or hungry? The one who demands ice cream for supper and tells you to stay up all night watching The Office even though you know you are much better off getting a good night’s sleep?
That’s who I’m talking about today.
Taming your inner five-year-old
Big thanks to Jen for helping me with this week’s episode!
If you are having a treat, and it’s not as tasty as you expected it to be – don’t waste your time. Take a bite of that cake, or eat that cookie and get rid of the rest. You’ve satisfied your desire to have that item – and it was a disappointment. But now you know!
If that cake or cookie is AMAZING, then sit down and enjoy it. Don’t just stuff it in your face. Actually allow yourself the time to enjoy that item and you’ll appreciate it a whole lot more.
Cravings are an emotion.
I have a rule that if there is a food I am thinking about for a week, that weekend I let myself have it. If I’m thinking about a Dairy Queen Blizzard all week long, on Saturday I can go have a small one.
Willpower is ALSO an emotion.
We use to think willpower was a finite thing that we ran out of, but studies have proven that is not actually true. Willpower is an emotional response which is why it’s so much harder to resist things when you are tired, rundown, and stressed.
This is a really great episode, and I strongly urge you to take a listen to this week’s podcast.
And then go watch The Brain Explained on Netflix. It’s super fascinating!!
